School is out and free summer meals are in from June 28th to August 31, 2012. That's right; any child 18 years of age and under can enjoy a free healthy and great tasting breakfast and lunch at hundreds of schools, pools, parks, New York City Housing Authority complexes and other locations around the city.
No registration, documentation, or ID is required. Finding a summer meals site is easy. Use the search function on the Department of Education Website here, call 311 or text "NYCMeals" to 877-877 for information about the free breakfast and lunch summer meals program and to locate a convenient site near you.
SchoolFood will also be deploying three mobile food trucks this summer. In an effort to reach as many children as possible during the summer, mobile food trucks will visit beaches and parks throughout the city to hand out free delicious and nutritious lunches.
All summer long, Weeksville Heritage Center will be hosting "The Garden Praty", a food and music festival, every Saturday. The festival is free admission, though a $5 donation is suggested. This Saturday's activities will include a screening of Emancipation Day, a dance performance by Run Mary Run and music by DJ Reborn. At 7PM Amel Larrieux will perform for the Emancipation Day Concert.

The 2012 NYC Youth Guide to Summer Fun is now available on the Department of Youth and Community Development's website. Published annually by the DYCD, the New York City Youth Guide to Summer Fun is a broad citywide calendar of family-oriented events and resources. The vast compilation includes activities that range from the artistic to the athletic, from the literary to the musical, and can be enjoyed at indoor and outdoor locations – most for free or at low cost. The guide also includes a list of all public swimming pools and barbeque sites at public parks, as well as a comprehensive section on "Museum Deals" within the City.
